Site Update: Operation Bandwidth Rape Commencing

September 13, 2007

Site seem a little slow? A deluge of new visitors is testing the scalability of the site. That's a good thing.

100 users have signed up to ComicScout. Not too shabby.

There's a lot of assumptions when you're putting together a site like this. I assumed that somehow it would be the artists who would come out on top but it's, Alex Ross and Darwyn Cooke notwithstanding, all writers. Now this could have something to do with the fact that these new users were referred by the Newsarama Blog, and not Digital Webbing or some other more artist-minded site. Or it could be the fact that writers have guided the industry for the entire decade. Who knew?

This Brian K. Vaughan fellow seems to be the cat's meow. The Brits have a strong turn out, with Morrison, Moore, and Ellis duking it out for second place. But Mark Millar is lagging behind.

Some of you encountered problems uploading avatar images (where a black square showed up instead of your photo). User thecrookedman helped me get to the bottom of this. For the sake of future posterity trying to debug this very same issue (and finding this post on Google), it was the age-old problem of Internet Explorer uploading jpegs as "pjpeg". So there you go.

Some of you have found missing creators, or comics with missing creator info. Understand that A) the site is, for the most part, automated by custom software and B) if a creator hasn't had new work from a mainstream publisher since June 2007, he/she won't be indexed.

You'll notice at the top I've added a users tab. Some people have called this a "social network" site but that's not really the intention. ComicSpace is probably all you need for that (I'm on there incidentally). I think of it more of a message board with crazy, comic-specific features. I really want to talk about the comics we read - not the ones we're going to read once they come out.

Thanks again for everyone who's tried it out. I'm open to any suggestions you have (even ones involving jello especially ones involving jello). Just send me a line.
